Covering Fingergate

Oh, my fucking god. This is what the media coverage of this campaign has come down to? Blogger Joseph Cannon, who voted for Obama before he turned on him, says that "this gesture is not accidental, and it certainly is not presidential."

Fox News: Did Obama Give a "Flip" Response to Clinton Attacks?

US News & World Report: Obama's Wayward Finger

If Obama did this on purpose, it's a sign of incredible immaturity. If he did it by accident, it's a sign of inexperience. If a president were to make an accidental gesture like that while talking about a foreign leader, for example, it could cause a global uproar.
One Youtube poster did the media's job and showed that the Obama was clearly just scratching an itch -- with two fingers not one. Watch it here. Yes that's right: video from another angle shows Obama scratching his face with TWO fingers. Have you ever flipped someone off using two fingers?
Watch Obama's full remarks here. He comments on "gotcha" and "slash and burn" politics and the ABC debate with intelligence and humor and passion and then says "but not this time!" He says that he is going to just brush off this sort of commetary, which he illustrates with an intentional gesture of brushing his shoulders. The media and parts of the blogospher respond by analysing and over-analysing whether Senator Obama was flipping off his opponent.
I never thought I would see the day when this blog would have higher journalist standards than the mainstream media.
This whole incident underscores everything Barack Obama said during and after the latest debate.

I used to frequent Cannon's blog, but not any more since his serious mental impariment has become obvious. I suspect Cannon has lost a great deal of traffic on his site as a result.

If he is being paid off by someone for his current insane anti-Obama rants, I wonder if the payoff is worth the cost to his former credibility.

That decline in 'journalist standards' has been steady, coincidentally ever since SNL's debut in 1975 or so. You can look it up, the long and stupid list is boring. Maybe it's so grating this time because the DEmocratic candidates are smart, articulate, and showered with their supporters' passions.

What pisses me off no end is the school yard mentality, like everyone has been abducted and returned as Beavis and Butthead. Either that, or Obama is constantly being pulled over and searched for running for President while black.

Worst (and saddest), why isn't it obvious that Barry was doing Marlon as Vito Corleone?

First, thanks Gary for trying to bring some sanity to Cannon's blog, I feel like you're the only one who had some impact on his very troubled mind. But sadly, I think it's a lost cause. The guy lost his sanity somewhere in his personal war against Kos and the other more radical elements of the Obama supporters. In a very weird "logical" process, he decided that since some people supporting Obama were smearing Hillary, that Obama was evil. So instead of trying to debunk attacks against Hillary, he decided to go on and push the same type of crappy attack on Obama, like this faux scandal of the "fingergate", showing that he's only a different flavor of the same bigoted shit he's supposedly fighting. He wouldn't be the first great mind lost in the war against mental disease, but it's always sad. The only other possible logical explanation is that Cannon is in fact a racist, so I prefer the mental breakdown theory and I hope it was only temporary.

ps: I wonder when other blogs will seriously consider removing him from their blogroll to avoid associating themselves with the bigoted jerk he has become.

Glad to see this post, and the responses to it. Count me in as another former regular who has deleted the "fire" from my favorites list.

Also include me among those hoping that those who have linkbacks to CF will wise up and get rid of them, before they find themselves linked to the new worldview being spouted there.

I've tried very hard to reach the guy, but he has never been one to listen to alternate viewpoints or engage in anything other than attacks on those with whom he disagrees. It used to be that he behaved this way while standing on the "right side" of most of those arguments. But he's completely lost his way this time.

Depressing.

Question for you, Gary - if you see this:

Has there ever been a case where you have decided to remove a "link-back" to another blogger, based on the nature of what is being published there?

If not, COULD there be?

If so, what would it take?
